The Lok Sabha is set to hold a 16-hour-long discussion on Operation Sindoor beginning July 28, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to participate following his return from the UK and Maldives, according to sources.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also scheduled to respond to the detailed deliberations in the House.
On the same issue, the Rajya Sabha’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC) met earlier in the day and decided to hold a discussion on Operation Sindoor on July 29.
Sources revealed that while the Opposition had requested a farewell speech by outgoing Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, the government did not agree to the demand. However, it conceded to allowing farewell speeches by the seven MPs who are set to retire.
The Business Advisory Committee of the Lok Sabha had also met on Monday, where consensus was reached to allocate 16 hours for discussion on the high-stakes military and diplomatic operation.
Opposition parties have been insisting on the Prime Minister’s presence during the debate. Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, strongly criticised PM Modi for his continued silence on repeated ceasefire claims made by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Taking aim at the Prime Minister, Gandhi remarked, “What will PM Modi say? That Trump arranged the ceasefire? The truth is, Trump has claimed 25 times that he stopped the war between India and Pakistan, and the PM hasn’t responded even once. The entire world knows it.”
Gandhi emphasized that the debate should not just focus on Operation Sindoor, but also address broader defence issues, including defence manufacturing and foreign policy challenges. He accused the government of weakening India’s global standing, saying, “You can count on your fingers the number of countries supporting us. No one is standing with India.”
The upcoming parliamentary debate on Operation Sindoor is expected to be intense, with both sides preparing to present their narratives on the controversial defence operation and India’s broader strategic posture.
